Nico Fröehlich

Nico is a photographer from south east London known for his documentation of the working class from the people to the architecture with the diversity and inclusivity within that. One particular project of his that grabbed my attention was 'South Of The River', this was a documentary series of where he grew up as a child and how now as an adult sees things differently, incorporating "social realism, partially biographical, but ultimately a celebration of the working-class spirit and the enriching diversity of South East London". Nico's work relates completely with my project idea as I am capturing my life particularly the area I grew up in and how that shaped me as a person, within my images I don't want to focus on only the contents of an image but how to pull different elements such as lighting and angles to create a more fulfilling image that tells a story. He uses light perfectly when taking a photograph as it compliments the colours giving it serene feeling and the light is always just in the right place lighting up a door or dirty tiles on the floor. Nico shoots solely on film and the images that I love are shot on a Pentax 67, it is very obvious when something is shot on film as the image has a raw look and always seems to come out sharper, the colours a film roll can give you is phenomenal as I feel like they are picked up and enhanced much more.

This image stuck with me when looking at Nico's work as to me I immediately think of a door door in a tower block as thats what I've grown up around and it reminds me of childhood where as someone else may see something completely different, the sunlight beaming onto the green door creates a new feeling to an image, it can be early morning or in the evening as the sun is setting however, gives off a positive aura. Something about the image is very satisfying, it may be the many lines from the door and walls to the window panes making this something thats pleasing to the human eye as our brains love symmetry.
