René Burri

Rene Burri was a Swiss photographer, known for the documentation of "major political, historical and cultural events" then moving onto "key figures" later in his life. Rene was a Magnum Photos member where he worked on his book 'Die Deutschen' which was published in 1962 however, before this in 1956 he was in Europe and the Middle East where he shot some of my favourite work of his. I have always been interested in capturing the moment and it never fully processed that this was documentary photography so I wanted to delve into this more, so when I first saw Burri's work I was fascinated by how perfectly the image created a story and his rich lighting and colour grading skills this allows the ambience of the photograph to come together.

This image of Rene's stuck out to me, the men playing a game of pool after work gives a relaxed feel, the all white outfits contrast well with the deep turquoise pool table and red chairs in the background. It's very raw as there is plenty of movement happening in this shot causing some blurriness, from the pool balls to a waiter in the background however, I think it works well creating a realistic scene. Rene's colour images are what I have gained inspiration from the most, he knows how to make multiple bright colours work together without being overpowering, they have this calm look towards them this may be the grain or even the creme colours I see a lot in his work although, after seeing his black and white photography it has influenced me to buy some black and white film and start testing that out.
